Christmas gifts for employees, accompanied by a heartfelt note of thanks in an Enclosure Card, sends the right message to employees — that you value your relationship with them and want it to continue into the New Year.

A new study conducted by Ultimate Software shows a need for better manager-employee relationships in the workplace. Read on to learn how appreciation plays a role in relationship-building.

How Employee Christmas Gifts Strengthen Workplace Relationships

“We’re witnessing a fundamental shift in how employees view their managers,” says Adam Rogers, Ultimate Software’s chief technology officer. “Manager relationships aren’t just about someone telling you how to do your job, it’s a relationship that has a major impact on employee retention and happiness.”

The study, designed collaboratively with the Center for Generational Kinetics, surveyed 2,000 U.S. employees and managers.

Among the study’s findings:

  • 75 percent of employees say that approachability is the most important quality in an effective manager, but only 50 percent say they have an approachable manager.
  • 71 percent of managers say they know how to motivate their team, but only 44 percent of employees agree that their manager knows how to motivate them.
  • 80 percent of employees think they could do their job without managers and deem them unnecessary.
  • Despite this ambivalent attitude toward managers, a good manager-employee relationship plays a significant role in retention: more than half of surveyed employees say they’d turn down a 10 percent pay increase to stay with a great boss.

The biggest takeaway? The role and expectations for managers are changing — meanwhile, managers aren’t receiving the training, coaching and data they need to know what to change or how to improve.

What’s clear is that employees want better communication from managers, and more of it. Specifically, managers lead better when they learn how to motivate effectively — and appreciation is key to positive motivation.

According to the The Balance, “If you tell your reporting employees that you value them and their contribution, you are on the right path to motivate employees. Employees appreciate your positive recognition in any form. In fact, make sure that the majority of your interactions with employees are positive and appreciative.”

What better time to share your gratitude than the holiday season? It closes out the year on a high note and sets the tone for the coming New Year.

Choose employee Christmas gifts that employees will actually use and appreciate — like gThankYou Gift Certificates — and accompany your gifts with a warm note of thanks.

Sharing employee Christmas gifts and notes of gratitude is not a one-time transaction. It’s an opportunity to build and strengthen relationships. Encourage all managers in your workplace to take advantage of this communication opportunity!
